Science Cafe

April 21, 2015 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Birmingham Science Cafe brings the general public face-to-face with scientists in a laid-back atmosphere. Come to John’s City Diner the third Tuesday of every month for  Science Cafe. The evening begins at 6:00 pm with science trivia, followed by the guest speaker at 6:30.

SCIENCE TOPIC:  From Polar Bears to Plankton
SPEAKER:   Maggie Amsler

Maggie Amsler’s most recent trip to Antarctica was this past Feb-March where she worked to photo survey the sea floor and (for the first time)  and trap live crabs from 3000 feet deep. She returns to Antarctica in February 2016 for trip #25 and for the first of another three successive field seasons working the McCintock-Amsler-Baker funded chemical ecology project.  But before that she will make her first trip to the Arctic this July and have the opportunity to experience a very different kind of polar environment. Join us and hear from this intrepid marine researcher and get a first-hand account of how climate change is affecting our polar regions.
