FOX 6 Weather Lab

Using chroma key technology, FOX 6’s weather map puts you in the spotlight as a real weather reporter. Chroma key is the process of filming a scene, object or person in front of a pure-colored screen (typically either blue or green). That color can be removed later to add certain special effects. At McWane Science Center, our computer is programmed to replace anything green with the weather map. In the weather station you can get actual, up-to-the-minute weather data! We have installed a variety of weather instruments on the roof of McWane Science Center so you can check out the weather as it happens.

Science at Work:

In news broadcasting, weather reporters use chroma key technology to inform the public of current and future weather conditions. In the film industry, special effects artists use chroma key technology to provide a backdrop for actors.
