McWane Science Center Docent Program Docents at McWane Science Center are trained volunteers whose major responsibility is in presenting educational information to the public. This can be done in a variety of ways including exhibit interpretation, presenting interpretative programs, or being stationed at a cart or exhibit. Docents play a major role in helping our visitors gain a better understanding about science and the world around them. Docents are adults from all walks of life, ages, and educational backgrounds with a passion for life-long learning.

Application Process: The successful McWane Science Center docent will: 1) Fill out application and mail to: Kathy Fournier/Director of Science Education 200 19th Street North Birmingham, AL 35203
2) Successfully complete an interview with the Director of Science Education 3) Successful completion and return of DHR and criminal background checks 4) Attend all training sessions provided and required by McWane Science Center 5) Commit to 1 year of service with at least 12 hours of service per month
Training Process: In order to succeed, all newly accepted docents will be provided with adequate and on-going training from McWane Science Center staff as well as from experts within the community. Training topics may include, but will not be limited to the following: History of McWane Science Center, Exhibit Interpretation, Inquiry Based Learning, Science on a Sphere, Paleontology, and Animal Handling.
