Alabama Collections Center
The Explore! Museum Collections Center is devoted to hands-on activities that will engage visitors in geology, paleontology, anthropology and zoology. Classify feathers, butterflies, rocks, shells and more! Computer stations let you take an interactive part in learning about the scientific method. Develop your microscope skills. Touch fossils, skeletons, and rare minerals, too.
The Alabama Collections Center is the new home for more than 500,000 artifacts from the former Red Mountain Museum. The Center houses precious minerals, fossils and Native American artifacts. Highlights in the collection include the world's fourth-largest collection of mosasaurs; the Appalachiosaurus (the Alabama Tyrannosaurid); and the state fossil of Alabama, the Basilosaurus (an 80 foot fossil whale!).
Return to this page soon to see incredible images of the unearthing of a ancient Tylosaur skull by paleontologists at McWane Science Center. The fascinating Time-Lapse Photos will be available on this page, soon.
