KultureCity Sensory Inclusive Initiative

McWane Science Center partners with KultureCity to be a Sensory Inclusive organization and better serve our visitors with sensory processing needs.

KultureCity believes all children should be accepted and treated equally, and the future of these children should not be limited by their medical diagnoses. McWane Science Center shares this belief.

Through continuous training with KultureCity, our staff is equipped with tools to help visitors with sensory processing disorders enjoy our center.

Sensory Bags

Sensory bags and headphones will be available for checkout at the Ticketing Counter. Sensory bags include fidget toys and headphones. Sensory bags will also be available at the Security Desk when there is a long line at the Ticketing Counter. Headphones will also be available in the Lunchrooms on the Lower Level for field trips and other groups.

Quiet Areas

McWane has designated several quiet areas throughout the Adventure Halls where there is less noise and activity. These areas are ideal for visitors who are overstimulated and need a quiet place to sit. These areas are identified with signage and located in the following areas:

  • Lower Level: Aquascape Theater
  • Level 2: City Gallery
  • Level 3: Art & Tech Gallery

Sensory Room

The Sensory Room, located on Level 1 under the interior staircase, is designed to provide a safe, calming, sensory-supportive environment to facilitate self-regulation and relaxation for visitors who are feeling overwhelmed or overstimulated at the museum. Visitors can ask the security guard for access to the room.

Signage

Look for the KultureCity logo to show you Sensory Friendly areas within the McWane Science Center.

Social Story

Use McWane Science Center’s Social Story to walk kids through the steps of what will happen when they arrive at our museum and explore throughout the day. Preparing for a visit can help reduce anxiety for kids and teens with sensory sensitivities, giving them visual cues of where things are, who they can ask for help, and what McWane Science Center looks like!
