Educational Scholarship Fund
McWane Science Center has developed the Educational Scholarship Fund to help provide better access to hands-on science education programs for these children. It is McWane Science Center’s goal to serve as an extension of the classroom and provide the supplies, programming, laboratories, and resources that are currently unavailable to children in disadvantaged schools and households.
The Educational Scholarship Fund assists with the cost of serving pre-Kindergarten through twelfth grade students from low-income and at-risk populations. As a result of the Educational Scholarship Fund, McWane Science Center provides students, teachers, and families with the tools needed to make science concepts come to life. We utilize experiential education to spark not just an interest in, but a desire for, life-long learning about science.
The Educational Scholarship Fund is an ongoing program that provides students and teachers with access to the following services:
- Fieldtrip to McWane Science Center: There is no better way to excite a young person about science than to let him or her experience it for themselves in a highly interactive and fun setting such as McWane Science Center. While here, students have the opportunity to take part in an educational program that meets Alabama Course of Study Standards for the appropriate grade level. McWane Science Center offers over 40 different educational programs from which to choose.
- Outreach Program to School Classrooms: When transportation is a barrier that cannot be overcome, McWane Science Center goes to the school. An outreach program is also a good reinforcement after a visit to McWane Science Center. McWane Science Center offers 13 different classroom outreach programs.
In general, $10 will cover the cost of one student’s admission for a field trip to McWane Science Center. For $300, you can cover the cost of admission for an entire classroom. Funds donated to the Educational Scholarship Fund are held in a separate account and only utilized to cover qualifying groups’ admission to and programming at McWane Science Center. Unless otherwise requested, qualifying groups can include schools designated as Title I schools, non-profit private schools in which the majority of the students have subsidized tuition, pre-school and daycare programs that serve low-income households and other public schools that can show a financial need for assistance; such as targeted Title I schools, rural schools or schools with high free and reduced lunch program percentages who do not receive Title I funds.
