Our programs support your curriculum and meet the Alabama Course of Study Standards (ACOSS) and National Science Education Standards (NSES). McWane Science Center makes science exciting and inspires exploration in each of the young minds that enter our doors.
Help us continue our mission by booking a field trip and becoming our partner in changing lives through science and wonder.
Since 1998, scientists have celebrated Earth Science week. This time is used to educate the public about the earth sciences and to equip them with appreciation, understanding, and stewardship. For this 20th celebration of Earth Science Week, the American Geosciences Institute has declared the theme to be “Earth as Inspiration,” and is emphasizing artistic expression as a powerful tool for geoscience education. In honor of the 20th celebration of Earth Science Week (as well as McWane’s 20th anniversary of sparking wonder and curiosity about the world), McWane encourages students to explore their relationship and responsibilities to the Earth through poetry and artwork.
McWane will accept poetry and art entries through October 1st, 2018; winners will be notified by October 20th, 2018, and their work will be displayed in the center to serve as inspiration to visitors of all ages. This form must be turned in along with the contest entry. For more information about the 2018 Earth Science Week, please visit: earthsciweek.org.
The goal of the McWane Educator Advisory Committee is to foster collaboration and learning among teachers and be an advocate for McWane’s mission to spark wonder and curiosity about our world through hands-on science.

Are you a 3rd – 5th grade teacher? Would you like to bring STEM to life for your students? Does the sound of cash prizes for your classroom excite you? Have we got the opportunity for you! McWane Science Center’s Celebrate Science Exhibit Design Challenge is a year-long program through which students build a real prototype of a museum exhibit and compete for best of show. If accepted, you’ll receive a free field trip to McWane, a free outreach to your classroom, free guidance throughout the exhibit design process, and an invitation to the culminating Awards Ceremony.
This year we’re giving Celebrate Science a “Sweet Home Alabama” twist to help celebrate Alabama’s 2019 Bicentennial with all projects required to display a connection to our state. Whether that takes the form of an exhibit in a field an Alabama scientist/inventor worked in or an exhibit highlighting a state natural resource, state landmark, or current scientific innovation occurring in Alabama, the choice is up to you! We look forward to seeing the incredible creativity ahead.
Find the application link below and please return applications Wednesday, October 31 .
